Valley Forward is proud to sponsor the Second Annual Gallop 4 The Greenways, to be held on Saturday, May 10 at 5:00 PM. Last year's event raised over $35,000.00, and we're looking forward to an even greater success this year. We believe that completion of the Conceptual Greenway Plan will be a vital catalyst for change in the Roanoke Valley, and will provide a wide range of recreational and economic opportunities for valley residents. A greenway is a protected, vegetated corridor, through an urban or developing area, often providing access to rural countryside. Most people think of greenways as “linear parks.” Usually, they include trails extending for miles along lands that typically remain undeveloped, such as stream or river corridors or abandoned railways. Any strip of open land can become a greenway. Two famous examples of greenways that run through our region are the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Greenway benefits improve the quality of life in a community and translate ultimately into economic vitality. Businesses want to locate in communities their employees like, and wellness and fitness promotion reduce corporate health costs. Outdoor recreation facilities draw tourists and tourists spend money.
As the Roanoke
Valley develops, it is important that natural resources are
protected to buffer effects of urban development. Greenways are a
practical step in achieving sustainable development and are a place
where people can enjoy the beauty of nature. |
