Greetings G4G Runners and Walkers-
This year's Gallop 4 the Greenways will certainly be different than year's past. As you may have guessed, due to flooding, our race course has changed, so please continue to read for more details about this year's Gallop 4 the Greenways event.
New Race Course due to Flooding
In year's past, our course started near the pedestrian bridge on Wiley Drive and traveled down to Wasena Park and back. As of Thursday, the low water bridge was completely covered in water, so we need to go to our flood course.
The new course for walkers, runners and the kids' fun run will start at the cross walk adjacent to the tennis courts and playground on Wiley Drive which is positioned up toward Franklin Road.
The kids' race will be just under a half mile down Wiley and back up the Greenway to the starting line. Parents are permitted to run with their children.
5K and walking participants will run down Wiley toward Carilion and hop the curb to access the Greenway. From that point, it's all Greenway. Walkers will see a very visible turnaround point for the 1 mile walk. That turnaround will be positioned on the Greenway across from the Carilion parking garage.
Runners will travel all the way down the Greenway past Piedmont Park and come to a course marshal and an orange cone. That's where you'll u-turn and backtrack to the pedestrian bridge.
Opposed to ending at the cross walk starting line, we're directing participants to the right over the pedestrian bridge which will put them at the finish line and also at our festival grounds. If the weather cooperates, we'll have the Key West band rockin' some beach music to greet you at the finish line.
Packet Pick-Up
We encourage everyone to pick up their race numbers and shirts at Fleet Feet Sports on Friday evening or Saturday morning.
Our hours for pick-up on Friday are from 3pm to 7pm and on Saturday you can pick up from 10am to 1pm at Fleet Feet.
We strongly suggest that you take advantage of the Fleet Feet pick-up times because our window at the race is only from 4pm to 4:45pm for packet pick-up and registration.
If you know of someone who still needs to register, registration will be open during the Fleet Feet hours.
After-Party
Also due to the flooding, we have moved the after-party location slightly. When you hit the finish line, you'll literally be facing the after party which will be in the back gravel lot on the Reserve Avenue fields. This is the same spot as last year's after-party location. There will be food and beverage for sale at the after-party to accommodate the free music and activities.
Thanks for supporting our Greenways, and we'll see you at the race!
Make a Run for the Beach!
The 2013 Gallop 4 the Greenways will feature Roanoke's best (and only) post-race beach party!
After running or walking in the Gallop join us just across the river for a host of beach-themed activities including free live music, volleyball, stand-up paddle board demos and much more!
This year's live entertainment will be provided by The Key West Band. These guys are true beach loving aficionados and know how to strike up a little Jimmy Buffet to get you movin' to the groove. They'll be playing a host of tropical cover songs that we can all sing along to.

If dancin' to the sounds of the ocean breeze isn't your thing, grab a few friends and strike up a friendly game of beach volleyball adjacent to the music stage (minus the sand). And if you are feeling extra daring, you can brave the waves on a stand-up paddle board. Let's just hope the waves are tame on the Roanoke River for those who have never tried an SUP.
All of the post-race activities are included in your race fee, and admission to the after-party is completely free to friends, family members and the general public. Food and beverage trucks will be on hand for an additional fee.
New (Cheaper) Race Fees
In past year, your race fees were slightly higher to cover the cost of the food, but this year, in an effort to keep the race fees down, we're bypassing the food. Actually, we will have food trucks on hand, but the food is not included, so you'll need to bring your own wallet or some coconuts to barter for a good old fashioned hot dog. We'll also have an "adult beverage" truck on hand and additional vendors will supply water and soft drinks.
