This year's Gallop 4 the Greenways will include a Four-Mile Gallop as well as a new Greenway Triathlon!



New Greenway Triathlon

1. The first leg of the triathlon will be a 4.3 mile run, starting across the foot bridge on the Roanoke River Greenway adjacent to Wiley Drive.

2. From the starting line, run on the Roanoke River Greenway towards Franklin Road.

3. Just before Franklin Road, veer right to continue on the Roanoke River Greenway.

4. Continue across both low-water bridges, through Wasena Park, and across the bridge into Vic Thomas Park.

5. Enter Vic Thomas Park and keep to the right of the loop, continue up the sidewalk towards the front of Black Dawg Salvage where you will turn left onto the sidewalk of the Memorial Avenue Bridge and continue across. 

6. Once across the bridge, you will get back on the Roanoke River Greenway and proceed through Memorial Bridge Park and across the bridge. Continue on the Roanoke River Greenway to the Bridge Street Parking Lot, where you will turn around and return to Memorial Bridge Park to conclude the first leg of the Greenway Triathlon.

7. The second leg of the Greenway Triathlon will be a 2.7 mile paddle down the Roanoke River Blueway! After the conclusion of the first leg, begin the paddling section by entering the Roanoke River at Memorial Bridge Park. 

8. Paddle down the Roanoke River and pass under the Wasena low-water bridge. 

9. After passing under the first low-water bridge, continue downstream on the river right until you reach the second low-water bridge below Smith Park. Here, you will portage your watercraft across the low-water bridge by exiting your watercraft and carrying it across the bridge and re-entering the river on the downstream side. 

10. After the portage, continue downstream until the conclusion of the second leg at the river take-out at the Bridges to conclude the second leg of the Greenway Triathlon.

11. The third and final leg of the Greenway Triathlon will be a 5.6 mile bike ride up and down Mill Mountain via the Roanoke River Greenway, Mill Mountain Greenway, and Fishburn Parkway.

12. After the conclusion of the second leg, hop on your bike in the Honeytree Learning Center Parking Lot and turn left onto S. Jefferson St. and cross the Roanoke River, turning right at the intersection of Belleviewe Ave. and S. Jefferson St.

13. Continue on Belleviewe Ave. until you reach Walnut Ave. and then turn right.

14. Continue cycling on Walnut Ave. until it turns into JP Fishburn Parkway. Follow JP Fishburn Parkway up Mill Mountain and loop around the parking lot adjacent to the Mill Mountain Star.

15. After completing the loop at the Mill Mountain Star, return on the route in which you came and finish on Wiley Drive across from the River's Edge Footbridge!




Four-Mile Gallop

1. The starting line for the Four-Mile Run is just across the foot bridge on Wiley Drive, adjacent to the Roanoke River Greenway.

2. From the starting line, run up Wiley Drive towards Franklin Road.

3. Just before Franklin Road, veer right to continue on Wiley Drive.

4. Continue across both low-water bridges, and turn left onto Winona Drive before taking an immediate right onto 8th Street/Winchester Avenue.

5. Turn right onto Wiley Drive to get onto the Roanoke River Greenway, and cross over the foot bridge into Vic Thomas Park.

6. After crossing into Vic Thomas Park, use the left-hand path to loop around the park. After reaching the end of the loop, continue down the Roanoke River Greenway.

7. On the Roanoke River Greenway once you come to Smith Park, take the path around the park so that the playground is located on your right. After the loop, return to the Roanoke River Greenway and finish your race at the River's Edge across foot bridge!




Kid's Fun Run

The Kids' Fun Run will be a short and simple out-and-back on the Greenway starting at the footbridge near the river at River's Edge Sports Complex. Kids will gallop down Wiley Drive toward the Franklin Road bridge. Just before arriving at the bridge, they'll steer right and circle back to the foot bridge via the Greenway where they'll be met by a host of cheering  runners preparing for their race. The course length is just under a half mile, and parents are invited to trot along with their youngsters.


 Greenway Walk

The walk will be approximately 1.5 miles round trip. The starting line will be near the footbridge on Wiley Drive and walkers will meander down to and around Smith Park and back. The official finish line will be the same as the Four-Mile Gallop and Greenway Triathlon finish.
